About Jake
Jake Merritt grew up on the east side of Klamath Falls and started doing exterior home repairs part-time while finishing his contractor's apprenticeship. He joined Klamath County Handyman in 2016 as a technician and moved into the lead role two years later. If Cody is the guy you call when the roof has a problem, Jake is the one you want when the fence blew over last night or the deck looks like it won't survive another winter.
He's worked on properties all over Klamath County — everything from postage-stamp suburban lots in Altamont to working ranch fences outside Bonanza. That range of experience matters because the ground conditions, the wood choices, and the right way to set a post can differ significantly depending on where you are and what the soil holds.
Fence and Exterior Expertise
Jake has installed and repaired every type of residential fence in Klamath County: cedar privacy, chain-link, vinyl, split rail, and farm-grade wire. His practical take — which he'll tell you unprompted — is that most homeowners overthink the material choice and underthink the post depth. "The fence falls because the post failed," he says. "Usually because it wasn't set deep enough, or it wasn't set in concrete, or somebody used a post that wasn't rated for ground contact."
He's also one of the more experienced pressure washers in the area. He knows the difference between a surface that needs a hot wash and one where high pressure will open up the wood grain and create more problems than it solves. Composite decking, stucco, and painted wood siding all require different approaches — Jake's built that knowledge up the hard way, by seeing what goes wrong when it's done carelessly.
Wind Damage Work
Klamath County gets strong east wind events in the fall and spring that regularly flatten fence sections and tear off fascia boards. Jake has been the first person on the scene for dozens of those calls. His articles about wind damage are based directly on patterns he's seen — what typically breaks first, what usually holds, and what to check even when everything looks fine at first glance.
Writing for Homeowners
Jake writes for homeowners who want honest, practical information — not a sales pitch. His cost guides reflect what jobs actually cost in Klamath Falls, not national averages that have no bearing on local labor rates. He tends to write in the same voice he uses in person: direct, specific, and without unnecessary caveats.
Outside of Work
Jake lives in Klamath Falls with his partner Denise and their dog, a cattle-mix named Gravel. He hunts in the Klamath Marsh area every fall and keeps a small vegetable garden that he describes as "more aspirational than productive."
